Why Anmeldung matters

In Germany you usually must register your address (Anmeldung) soon after moving. The appointment is short, but the language can feel formal.

Before you go

Bring your passport, rental contract (Mietvertrag), and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung).

Useful phrases:

  • Guten Tag, ich habe einen Termin zur Anmeldung. - Hello, I have an appointment for registration.
  • Hier ist mein Pass und der Mietvertrag. - Here is my passport and the rental contract.
  • Können Sie das bitte wiederholen? - Could you please repeat that?
  • Ich verstehe nicht ganz. Langsamer, bitte. - I don't quite understand. More slowly, please.
  • Wann bekomme ich die Meldebescheinigung? - When do I get the registration certificate?

At the counter

  • Ich wohne seit dem hier. - I have been living here since
  • Meine Adresse ist - My address is
  • Ist das alles? - Is that everything?

After Anmeldung

You may need the Meldebescheinigung for bank accounts, phone contracts, and residence permits.
